Plastic in Agricultural Production: Impacts, Lifecycles and LONg-term Sustainability
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The PAPILLONS project deals with the design and manufacturing of new plastic materials for agriculture through the study of the sources, behavior and long-term ecological and socio-economic impacts of micro- and nano-plastics from agricultural plastics (AP) in European soils. The project also aims to provide the scientific background necessary to enable innovation in Italian and European agricultural and industrial policy. It is integrated into the priority actions concerning the climate, agriculture, environment and oceans of the European GREAN DEAL, inscribed in the context of GREEN CHEMISTRY and CIRCULAR ECONOMY. In particular, the project is included in the EU Global Strategy on plastic materials, which promotes the reuse, regeneration, and prevention of plastic waste, developing the use of biodegradable plastics in agriculture.
The project activities also concern the development of new materials for agriculture with low environmental impact, and the transfer of the acquired know-how to the stakeholders in the sector to expand their competitiveness on international markets, and to generate significant impacts on the productive, economic and social sector.
