Ionic Cellulose/calcium phosphate hybrids: new bio-sourced materials for bone tissue regeneration
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
In the project, the main scope is the investigation of a new classes of compounds produced via a green synthesis from cellulose and their conversion into ionic cellulose. New water soluble derivatives of ionic cellulose will be synthesized and characterized with various techniques (i.e., XRD, FTIR, AFM, etc). Moreover, innovative processes such as electro fluid dynamic will be properly adapted for the fabrication of mineralized hybrid materials in different forms (i.e., fibres, microgels) to improve their interface with cells in vitro. All these activities will benefit of complementary expertise in the fields of cellulose chemistry (Egyptian partner) and in material/biomaterials science and technologies (Italian partner) to develop novel ionic cellulose based composite and/or hybrid materials for bone regeneration. In a future view, the proposed study of ionic cellulose could offer relevant research outcomes, suggesting alternative solutions to the current chemical synthesis of biodegradable polymers and composites for potential applications in the repair or regeneration of different mineralized tissues (i.e., bone, dental or osteochondral compartment).
