Three Dimensional brain in vitro models via electrofluidodynamics
BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
The use of cell cultures grown on two-dimensional (2D) substrates has allowed a significant advancement of knowledge in Neuroscience. However, 2D cell cultures force cells to grow as an artificial monolayer and, consequently, to express morphologies and functionalities different from those observed in neural cells in vivo. Nano-structured interfaces and biomaterials can be optimized for the implementation of in vitro 3D models in which the molecular and functional characteristics of cells in vitro closely resemble those they express in vivo. 3DNEUROGLIA is a joint proposal for a project with two CNR teams (CNR-IPCB and CNR -ISOF) which aims to implement customized micro / nanostructured platforms to define a valid in vitro 3D model that allows studying functions and interactions of neural cells in vitro into a physiologically-like environment similar to that observed in vivo.
