About us

The Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) is the main research institute of the National Research Council (CNR) dedicated to the development of polymeric materials, composites and biomaterials, as well as biomacromolecules, green chemistry and chemistry for life sciences. Through a multidisciplinary approach, transversal skills are integrated, from synthesis to processing up to the validation in the relevant environment of innovative materials that are able to responde to the technological, economic, and environmental challenges in modern society.

THEMATIC AREAS

The research activities of the Institute of Polymers, Composites and
Biomaterials (IPCB) are:

Polymers, Composites and Nanostructures (natural and / or synthetic) with engineered structural and functional properties;

Multi-phase polymersnanomaterials and nanostructures (natural and / or synthetic) for • Tissue engineering, • Regenerative / therapeutic medicine,  • Drug delivery, • Biointerfaces, • Bioprinting;

Structural characterization of glycoproteins for the identification of biomarkers;

Synthesis, functionalization, modeling and advanced characterization of polymer-based materials;

Advanced and sustainable transformation technologies of polymers, composites and nanostructures. Additive technologies;

They are organized into three main research platforms such as

MISSION

Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) – Pozzuoli

The Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) was founded in March 2014 by merging the Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers (ICTP) and the Institute of Composite and Biomedical Materials (IMCB). The headquarter of the Institute is in Pozzuoli and supporting units are located in Napoli/Portici, Catania, Lecco and, as Third Research Unit, in Lecce at the University of Salento. The IPCB with 112 employees (84 researchers and technologists, 28 technicians and administrative, several post-docs and PhD students and 25 university associates) is the biggest Italian institute performing research on polymers, composite materials and related advanced technologies. The research activities, developed within Key Enabling Technologies are mainly focused on the synthesis and design of advanced polymer based materials, the development of personalized solutions in nanomedicine and health, the application of chemistry and materials science for the environment and energy, transport, packaging and cultural heritage. Strong partnership is active with many institutions such as universities, research centres, technological districts, clusters and SMEs, both at national and international level with a focus on societal challenges.

The Institute of Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials (IPCB) is performing research activities organized in the three main research platforms, named Sustainability, Advanced Materials, Health and Nanomedicine, are the following:

Polymers, composites and nanostructures (bio-and synthetic) with multifunctional and sensing properties;

Multi-phase polymers, nanomaterials and nanostructures (natural and / or synthetic) for • Tissue engineering and regenerative / therapeutic medicine including cancer and controlled drug delivery devices, • Biointerfaces, • Bioprinting;

Structural characterization of glycoproteins for biomarkers identification;

Synthesis, functionalization and modelling of polymers based materials. Structural and functional characterization of macromolecules and polymer-based materials and advanced analysis techniques;

Advanced and sustainable processing technologies of polymers, composites and nanostructures. Additive Technologies;

Knowledge and technology transfer; Outreaching.
