The Advanced Materials, Nanomaterials and Biosensing Working Group, U.S.-Italy Science and Technology Cooperation on Science and Technology, at the Embassy of Italy in Washington for the 2023 Italian Research Day in the World and the celebration of the 100th anniversary of CNR

 

The 2023 Italian Research Day in the World together the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Italian National Research Council has been organized by the Embassy of Italy, Washington DC last April 20th and chaired by the Science Counselor Prof. M. Gilli. Dr. Luigi Ambrosio and Sofi Bin-Salamon, the chairmen of the working group, and Valentina Benfenati were invited to participate at the panel on “Smart materials for better life”.

After the welcome addresses Ma.me Ambassador Mariangela Zappia, Mr. Jason Danovan – US State Department and Prof. Maria Chiara Carrozza – President of the CNR; Eminent scientists from USA and Italy discussed the featuring and strategic role of smart materials in different sectors of applications.

The following day, April 21st, a workshop has been held at the Embassy on the ongoing and future activities of the Advanced Materials, Nanomaterials and Biophysics working group.

The U.S.-Italy bilateral collaboration within this working group, coordinated by Dr. Luigi Ambrosio (CNR) and Dr. Sofi Bin-Salamon (AFOSR), is an outstanding pillar of the international cooperation under the umbrella of the U.S.-Italy Science and Technology Cooperation on Science and Technology. The workshop, chaired by Prof, Marco Gilli, included contribution by Luigi Ambrosio (IPCB-CNR), Valentina Benfenati (ISOF-CNR), Paola Nicchia (University of Bari), Maria Grazia Raucci (IPCB-CNR), Giovanna Gomez d’Ayala (IPCB-CNR), Thomas Brown (University of Rome Torvergata), Andrea Candini (ISOF-CNR), Roberto Zamboni (IPCB-CNR), Giulio Busulini, Wolfgang Losert (University of Maryland), Shashi Karna, (U.S. Army Research Laboratory), Ishan Barman (Johns Hopkins University), Larry Nagahara, (Johns Hopkins University), Dr. Sofi Bin-Salamon, Dr. Andrew Stickrath, Dr. Richard Riecken, Dr. Fariba Fahroo, (AFOSR), Dr. Jeff Buchsbaum (Natl. Cancer Institute). The workshop discussion clearly identified a future strategy in terms of promoting integration, networking and new education models to foster active paths from basic science to innovation by developing disruptive research and technology activities within the framework of advanced materials, nanomaterials and biophysics working group
